With Justice For All Project
DP update
Project Description
This semester we learned a lot about people. We first studied dr king’s ideas of civil disobedience and what determines just and unjust laws. We then learned about moral philosophy and the legal system studying Deontology, Utilitarianism, libertarianism and John Rawls. We began researching problems and injustices in our community and eventually chose the topic of homelessness for our project. We studied about what people believed was just and unjust and discussed what we thought was just and unjust. We chose this topic because it was a topic of injustice and both an issue we had in our community, and something that we felt we could do something about and maybe have an impact on some people. After doing research on homelessness in the community, nationwide, and worldwide we decided this would be a good topic and decided our project. I decided to take on the idea that the homeless could have a job and work and still be unable to afford a place to sleep. In Durango there is not a huge amount of low income housing and it can still not accommodate people with super low incomes if they even have any room.
Event takeaways
Our event was great. It was an exhibition, a fundraiser, a place for people to get clothes, free food for anyone hungry and more. We had a few guest speakers that talked about homelessness in Durango and ways that it is being helped and what can be done to help it. A fellow classmate Harley Farkas wrote a very inspiring, thoughtful speech and spoke to the people at the event I think having a great impact on some. There was a few homeless people who came to my table and asked about my project and after speaking to them for a while every one of them told me how we had covered a very important, growing issue and thanked me for my project. I thought that this was good because after all our project was regarding homeless people and for someone in that situation to tell me that my project had meaning to them I really liked. Overall I think our event was very successful. A lot of people showed up, a lot of food was eaten and the issue was immensely discussed.
Project Effort
I think that while making my project I definitely pushed myself to make a good art piece. Although my partner had done a stencil before it was a new thing for me and I was unsure if it would come out good or not. With a stencil made from paper as we did if the first try does not come out as wanted the paper is ruined and another one has to be printed and cut out again. This was scary for me because I knew if our stencil did not work we wouldn’t have enough time to make another one. My partner and I took a picture, put it in photoshop, printed it, cut it, and then spray painted it. By the time we had our door and the stencil ready to spray we only had 3 more days till exhibition. After we sprayed it our stencil came out as good as I had hoped for and possibly better. I think that trying a new area of art was good and I was forced to put my full effort into making it.
Personal Growth and Development
I think that this project had an important impact on me. First of all I learned a huge amount about the general topic and a lot of previous doubts about or opinions on homeless people changed. One day we went on a field trip to the homeless camp in test tracks and talked to some inhabitants and saw what their homes looked like. I learned a lot more about how many reasons a person can be homeless and came to the conclusion there is as many reasons to be homeless as there are homeless people. Actually talking to these people and hearing their stories I was amazed by things I had previously thought 100% true about homeless people could be completely wrong. There was one man we talked to and he explained to us he had a job, a girlfriend, a dog, but no home. He told us he didn’t want to spend money on a home and he’d rather live outside. Although I have thought about this myself I never considered someone actually doing it especially in a place with reasonably cold winters. We also talked to a lady who just explained how she’s treated differently at the hospital if she has a big backpack on or if she needs to charge her phone while there. I think that conversations with the homeless people had the most impact on me hearing such a variety of stories and seeing more closely how they live changed my view on homelessness for the rest of my life.
